What is the CETA?

The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the European Union (EU) helps create jobs, strengthens economic relations and stimulates Canada’s trade with the world’s second largest market. The CETA is a progressive free trade agreement that covers virtually all sectors and facets of the Canada-EU trade relationship with the aim of eliminating or reducing trade barriers. For example, prior to the entry into force of the CETA, only 25% of the EU’s tariff lines on Canadian products were duty-free. Thanks to the CETA, 98% of its EU tariff lines are now duty-free for Canadian products. When the agreement is fully implemented, the EU will have eliminated tariffs on 99% of its tariff lines.
